You will need to measure the area you want to cover. Make sure there are no pipes, outlets or wiring around or under the vinyl tile flooring. You don’t want to make any mistakes on this step and have a circuit breaker trip on you while you’re laying your project.

Lay down a cardboard layer and make pencil lines where each of your pieces will go. If you are using a peel and stick tile, the lines will be to help you cut off any overhanging edges later on. For those that aren’t this type of tile, do a dry run with some pieces to see if it looks good where you want it before committing to the flooring adhesive.

After your first row is placed according to your line guides, put down another layer of cardboard. Make more lines to keep your pattern straight and even. The second row should be laid over the first, but with a 1/8 inch gap between them where you removed the cardboard from in between.

You will add tiles on top of this layer until you have reached the end of your area. Lay them perpendicular to the underlying rows and alternating the pattern so that you will have no visible seams.
